A polui\u00e7\u00e3o pl\u00e1stica nos oceanos \u00e9 um dos maiores desafios ambientais da atualidade. Com a produ\u00e7\u00e3o global de pl\u00e1stico em constante crescimento e taxas de reciclagem ainda insuficientes, toneladas de res\u00edduos acabam descartadas em rios, mares e ecossistemas ao redor do mundo, gerando impactos que v\u00e3o muito al\u00e9m da degrada\u00e7\u00e3o ambiental.<\/p>\n

O problema, por\u00e9m, j\u00e1 n\u00e3o se restringe aos oceanos. Nos \u00faltimos anos, a comunidade cient\u00edfica passou a investigar os efeitos da presen\u00e7a de micropl\u00e1sticos no organismo humano, revelando evid\u00eancias cada vez mais consistentes de que essas part\u00edculas est\u00e3o entrando na cadeia alimentar e se acumulando em diferentes tecidos e \u00f3rg\u00e3os.<\/p>\n

Pesquisas publicadas nos \u00faltimos dois anos confirmaram a presen\u00e7a de micropl\u00e1sticos no sangue, na placenta e no c\u00e9rebro de seres humanos, resultado do ac\u00famulo crescente de pl\u00e1stico nos oceanos.<\/p>\n

A mancha de detritos no Pac\u00edfico, apelidada de "S\u00e9timo Continente", j\u00e1 cobre 1,6 milh\u00e3o de quil\u00f4metros quadrados e cont\u00e9m cerca de 1,8 trilh\u00e3o de fragmentos pl\u00e1sticos, segundo dados do The Ocean Cleanup<\/a>.<\/p>\n

O achado mais recente \u00e9 de fevereiro de 2025: uma equipe da Universidade do Novo M\u00e9xico, liderada pelo toxicologista Matthew Campen, publicou na Nature Medicine<\/a> um estudo que comparou amostras de c\u00e9rebro humano coletadas em aut\u00f3psias de 2016 e de 2024 e encontrou um aumento de cerca de 50% na concentra\u00e7\u00e3o de micropl\u00e1sticos no c\u00f3rtex frontal em apenas oito anos.<\/p>\n

Um ano antes, pesquisadores j\u00e1 haviam associado, no New England Journal of Medicine<\/a>, a presen\u00e7a de micro e nanopl\u00e1sticos em placas carot\u00eddeas a um risco de infarto, AVC ou morte mais de quatro vezes maior, achado que se soma a estudos de 2021<\/a> e 2022<\/a>, ambos na Environment International, que identificaram part\u00edculas pl\u00e1sticas na placenta e no sangue humanos.<\/p>\n

O engenheiro e especialista em economia circular, Marcelo Souza, que tamb\u00e9m preside o Instituto Nacional de Economia Circular (Inec), afirma que os impactos da "ilha de pl\u00e1stico" est\u00e3o al\u00e9m dos mares. "O S\u00e9timo Continente n\u00e3o fica no Pac\u00edfico. Ele fica em nossas placas ateroscler\u00f3ticas, em nossas placentas, em nossos c\u00f3rtices frontais e nas cadeias alimentares que sustentam a vida moderna", pontua Souza.<\/p>\n

A mancha que inspirou a express\u00e3o \u00e9 tecnicamente chamada de Great Pacific Garbage Patch (GPGP) e foi mapeada com precis\u00e3o em 2018 por Lebreton et al., na Scientific Reports<\/a>: mais de 46% de sua massa \u00e9 composta por redes e equipamentos de pesca abandonados, que continuam capturando peixes e mam\u00edferos marinhos d\u00e9cadas depois de perdidos no mar.<\/p>\n

"O oceano n\u00e3o est\u00e1 apenas engolindo o que produzimos para descartar. Est\u00e1 engolindo tamb\u00e9m os instrumentos com os quais o saqueamos", diz Souza. A GPGP, por\u00e9m, n\u00e3o est\u00e1 isolada: um levantamento do 5 Gyres Institute, publicado em 2023 na PLOS ONE<\/a>, estimou que entre 82 e 358 trilh\u00f5es de part\u00edculas pl\u00e1sticas flutuam hoje na superf\u00edcie dos oceanos, com crescimento acentuado a partir de 2005 \u2014 e uma revis\u00e3o na Science Advances<\/a> recalculou o estoque total de pl\u00e1stico marinho, incluindo o que est\u00e1 depositado no fundo do mar, em 263 milh\u00f5es de toneladas.<\/p>\n

A exposi\u00e7\u00e3o humana n\u00e3o depende do consumo de frutos do mar. Um estudo<\/a> de 2024 da Universidade Columbia, na PNAS, identificou em m\u00e9dia 240 mil part\u00edculas de micro e nanopl\u00e1sticos por litro de \u00e1gua engarrafada, enquanto um levantamento da Ocean Conservancy com a Universidade de Toronto<\/a> encontrou micropl\u00e1sticos em 88% de 16 fontes proteicas analisadas nos Estados Unidos, de carne bovina a substitutos vegetais, com exposi\u00e7\u00e3o estimada em at\u00e9 3,8 milh\u00f5es de part\u00edculas por ano para um adulto americano.<\/p>\n

Por tr\u00e1s desses n\u00fameros est\u00e1 uma produ\u00e7\u00e3o que segue crescendo sem controle. Segundo Geyer, Jambeck e Lavender Law (Science Advances, 2017)<\/a>, apenas 9% de todo o pl\u00e1stico j\u00e1 fabricado pela humanidade foi reciclado. As negocia\u00e7\u00f5es de um tratado global contra a polui\u00e7\u00e3o pl\u00e1stica, conduzidas pela UNEP<\/a>, terminaram sem acordo em agosto de 2025, em Genebra, e, sem regula\u00e7\u00e3o, a produ\u00e7\u00e3o anual pode saltar dos atuais 435 milh\u00f5es de toneladas para 1,7 bilh\u00e3o at\u00e9 2060, com custo cumulativo estimado em US$ 281 trilh\u00f5es, segundo o F\u00f3rum Econ\u00f4mico Mundial<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Para Souza, a sa\u00edda passa por tratar a reciclagem como infraestrutura, redesenho de produtos, log\u00edstica reversa com Responsabilidade Estendida do Produtor, j\u00e1 em vigor nas Filipinas, e investimento em reciclagem mec\u00e2nica e qu\u00edmica, mercado que a OECD<\/a> projeta superar US$ 60 bilh\u00f5es por ano at\u00e9 2030. "N\u00e3o estamos apenas poluindo o planeta. Estamos transformando o pr\u00f3prio corpo humano em extens\u00e3o f\u00edsica do lixo que produzimos", resume.<\/p>\n
